Everybody has an element of sensory seeking needs, be it touch, smell, taste. For some - and I’m thinking of our tribe in particular – these needs can be heightened by anxiety or excitement. And the same goes for the sensory avoidance issues – loud noises, bright lights, busy spaces etc. Sensory processing sensitivities may affect one sense or it may affect multiple senses. And people can be over or under-responsive to the things they have difficulties with.
While they are distracted by these feelings they will find it very difficult to enjoy social situations or to learn at school.
Reducing a child’s sensory overload through the use of sensory products can contribute to their quality of life by creating a calm space in which they can concentrate on their social skills or education.
At Mockingbird we are fortunate to have a small designated room, but a sensory space can be as big or as small as you make it.
Check out the two websites below for their amazing sensory products - products that we use here at Mockingbird.
